Our History
Mother church
This church was started under the auspices of Bible Baptist Church of Savannah, GA, where Pastor Fred Willis had served as assistant pastor.
Founder and First Pastor
Pastor Fred Willis, his wife Anne, and their son and daughter moved to Hilton Head, SC, to start this new work early in 1988. They served the Lord in this church for sixteen and a half years, resigning in August of 2004. They now travel in full-time evangelism with Amazing Grace Mission, evangelizing in State Fairs and ministering in local churches all across the States.
Early Years of the Church
The church was begun in a home as a Bible study in January of 1988. The first Easter Sunday service was held at the Hilton Head Elementary School, where the church met for its first two years. The church was officially chartered in the summer of 1988. Then for the next nine years, the church met in rented facilities at Hilton Head Christian Academy, where the Lord blessed with significant growth.
The New Building
The church met in the Main Street Theater for two and a half years, and property was purchased nearby behind the adjacent Main Street Bowling Center. While the church met in the Theater, Pastor Willis and the men of the church built the new church at its current location. The first service in the new building was held on Sunday, October 21, 2001, and the dedication service for the new building was held on November 11, 2001. The Lord blessed in such a wonderful way that both the land and the new building were debt-free not long after the church got into its new facilities.
New Pastor
Pastor Scott Barber’s first Sunday as the new pastor was the first Sunday of September, 2004. Pastor Barber and his wife, Tresa, have four college-age sons. The Barbers have served the Lord here in this church now for two years, and they look to the Lord to continue to show His faithfulness to the building of His work here on Hilton Head Island and in its surrounding communities.
